Title: 11th Annual Chili cook off and March Meeting!
Post by: TJ Girl on February 06, 2018, 11:23:24 PM
Our annual Chili Cookoff and Club Meeting will be held March 11 at Mustang Sally Brewing Company in Chantilly VA.

Location:
Mustang Sally Brewing Co. (MSB)

14140 Parke Long Ct Ste A, B & C
Chantilly, VA, 20151
www.msbrewing.com

Come bring your best/hottest/tastiest chili and see how it stacks up against other club members'.  Chili will be voted on by attendees in several categories.  (Disclaimer: In the past this event has been peer judged, and we have needed as many as 30 to 40 samples of each chili for just the judging. If there is to be chili left over for actual consumption afterwards, I would suggest that folks plan to make a full crock pot worth of chili)

There are outlets for crock pots and warmers. Please be sure to bring a serving spoon or ladle and if a few folks could bring power strips that would be helpful as well.

The categories are: Best Chili, Most Original Chili and Hottest Edible Chili (you figure out the balance).

The club will provide and chili fixins such as cheese sour cream and chopped onions, and cornbread of course.

Please post up if you plan to attend, as well as if you plan to bring chili, so we can ensure we have enough supplies and drinks to go around.

Fun will start at 1300!  See you there!

For those bringing chili, when you arrive, please bring your crock pot  to the chili station. It will be assigned a number, and you can write a brief description about the chili.  We assign numbers to create a blind taste test. Also as a reminder, please remember to bring a serving utensil, and if a few folks could bring power strips, and extension cords, that would be great!

Once the meeting portion of the event has concluded we will need volunteers to help serve up the samples, and once the samples have been set, tasting/ voting will begin. Once tasting has concluded we will invite folks back up for a bowl of chili while the votes are tallied.

The brewing company has 2 indoor cornhole sets available for our use, and will make tours available if anyone wishes to take a tour of the facility. They also serve soft drinks. It is set up like an indoor backyard. Also please plan to bring a camping chair in case we exceed the seating they have available in this area, so you can have a place to hang out and enjoy!

If there are any other questions, please let us know.

Cornhole is a beanbag toss game with boards on the ground with a hole in each one.  So it seems that two matches of cornhole can be played at a time at the brewery.

Meetings generally last about 2 hours, with most of that time being spent hanging out.  Feel free to bring chili the day of, we just like to get a heads up on the count.

Doing my best to make sure I can be there.  No guarantees, though, social calendar has been filling ever-faster.  Looks like my next day without anything major associated is in the middle of May  :sleep

Also, why do people need to call out the fact that they're making "meat" chili?  Per Terlingua rules:
B. PREPARING CHILI
1.Chili must be cooked on site the day of the cookoff from scratch. "Scratch" means starting with raw meat and using regular
spices
. Commercial chili powder is permissible, but complete commercial chili mixes are NOT permitted.
2.Chili must be prepared out in the open  in as sanitary a manner as possible.
3.No beans, pasta, rice or other similar items are allowed.
4.The head cook must prepare the chili to be judged

Define raw meat???  I like kidney beans in my chili and like it over rice or pasta. I also use some fine aged dark rum to deglaze the pot.  I support returning Texas and California to Mexico and revoking the US citizenship of anyone who was ever born there.

Ever chili is winner after a several tequila shots

By the way, this is my favorite meeting of the year. It really brings out the crowds. And can you believe that Rtic cooler was raffled off?  Crazy!  Thanks to those who prepared the event.

And congrats to all of the winners (except Stephen - since I only had the sample of his chili and it made me cry 😉 )

I am kidding. Congrats Stephen!

Chili #2 I believe?  That was some yummy, spicy chili!  My head was sweating!  My wife turned red!  LOL

I scraped my sample cup dry then went back for a bowl.  That chili WAS spicy but it also had a unique flavor as well.  I really liked it...(even if I ws accused of trying to win the MACHO contest).
