Title: What did you do to your Jeep today? August 2018
Post by: overhead on August 01, 2018, 07:12:17 PM
I stared at it and debated taking it on Friday to brave the rain and cramped conditions for a work event just to have my jeep there. What did you do?

My new bumper and winch came in today.  Both survived shipping and will be installed on Sunday!

I tried to figure out how to fit two jockey boxes, a jockey box cover, two co2 gas bottles, three ice tubs, a 10x10 easy up, and some kegs in there for the Lorton Brewfest......

Removed recently non-working horn.  Off to the junkyard at lunch if it isn't raining to see if I can find one from a 70s Deville or other large GM car.

I loved putting those on my old air cooled VW's back in the day... No one could figure out who was honking in traffic...

I need to do the same - I am thinking GMC truck. My current horn sounds like you are sneezing, it does not strike fear in the hearts of anyone.

Exactly why I need to do the swap. Ignorant drivers do not even hear my horn when I honk in anger.

So.  The junkyard in Lorton had a 2000s Cadillac but it was stripped.  It also had the perfect 1978 4-door Brougham, but all the horns were gone and a bunch of other stuff.  I grabbed a mounted pair from a newer Trailblazer but it started to pour so I can't check them until tonight.  Might still eBay some Caddy horns at some point.

My four note horn is AWESOME!!  Try using two relays per two horns.  I used one for four and blew a fuse.  Going with two now!  Solder and shrink wrap the wires.  Harbor Freight has inexpensive ones!  If I am talking to much, and you know this, just tell me to STFU, but in a nice way.  :rotf

Was supposed to fly to Europe with my parents to visit my brother, who I haven't seen in a year since he moved to London. My American flight at 730 was delayed until 11 and then canceled, and then they rebooked me on a 5pm flight from Dulles (instead of DCA). Go all the way to Dulles, that flight is canceled. Miss my international connection, next available flight isn't until Sunday.

Open beer, rewire winch, go to bed.

I'm actually surprised at how good the XJ horns are...... But I kinda want another OOOOgah horn.

I got the Trailblazer horn set installed last night.  Nice loud horn set - good note.  The wire gauge was somewhat thin on these and I had the connector with them so I didn't use a relay.  I think I will still be on the lookout for a Cadillac 70s 4-horn set just for the fun of it (and yes I know to use relays for those).

I already built a set of PVC train horns for someday when I have onboard air.  Those things are awesome!  I think they border on being illegal in VA though.  What you can see, you don't know...

Added a steering box support and replaced the drop pitman arm with a standard pitman arm.

While watching a video of the CJ at Rausch I was stunned to see how much the steering box moved & flexed when under stress. I decided I need to do something about the movement before the steering and frame are permanently damaged.

I replaced the drop pitman arm with a stock pitman arm to re-position control and reduce the moment arm. Then I installed a Rugged Ridge Heavy Duty Steering Box brace as a reinforcement for the standard mount and reduce as much as possible any lateral movement when the steering box is under stress..

Wow - what a difference it made in the steer and tracking of the CJ. The steering is crisp and the wandering has disappeared making for a more enjoyable driver. It would appear box move under normal driving loads most like cased by the over size tires.

This may be one of the better eighty bucks I've spent (RR Steering Support $60/Pitman arm $20)......

Took a friend on Peters Mill on Saturday on a solo run.  Initially planned on Flagpole but with all the rain and me being a solo Jeep decided Peters Mill a safer (but still fun outing with all the past rain), route.  Was not disappointed.

Encountered a single '18 Wangler and a group of 6 or so out of Hampton Roads.  Heard everyone was in Winchester?

I did manage to hurt the Jeep.  Everything seems tight and unbroken but the steering is terrible!  VERY spongy, wants to drift all over.  Possible bad steering box? or pitman arm?  Gues I'll have Pro Trucks or Big Snatch check it out Monday.

Still.........had lots of fun!

OH!  I forgot, I painted the front D-rings orange to match the "Mountain" decal on the hood.

I vote big snatch. But get underneath with someone moving through steering back and forth and you'll usually be able to at least kinda see what the problem is

I had the Cadillac horns fixed and rewired.  Seems a bad ground was causing the issue.  My "bad" Truck Lite fixed itself.  I'm hanging onto the single just in case.

Rewired the winch, removed the drop brackets, installed a set of Synergy lower control arms. These things are amazing, the adjustable collar lets you dial in caster while they're mounted.

But on another note, somehow my flood lights stopped working, the squeak from my swaybar is back, and I realized the loud bang from whenever I go over a pothole or speedbump is my exhaust dying -- it's been too hot to handle after driving, so need to actually let it sit for a bit and see what I broke at Rausch that's making it sit at 45-degree decline.

There's always something...

Part 2:  I bent the tie-rod (center).  How did I miss seeing that!  Anyway, decided "What a perfect sign to upgrade!"  So Big Snatch installed a big ol' YETI.
Unfortunately, when I went to get an alignment, I was informed that the adjusting bolt/nut/thingamajig on mt drag link was seized up.  So, Quadratec is warrantying me a new Synergy drag link. So, Jeep is drivable, just not straight.......yet.

What amp fuses are you running on them?  I would think those should have a 20 amp one especially since they just get applied momentarily.

Discovered my exhaust is bent at a 45 degree angle towards the belly. Put a set of vice grips to try and pull it straight but no luck...might try and grab a winch to winch it back into position, but also might use this as an excuse to get a high clearance catback system

Pic?  Sometimes you can pry with a 2x4 if you can get it up in there.  The bottle jack or a scissor jack might work too.

Can also try a ratchet strap hooked to something below it/in the direction you want it to go. Or the ole BFH if there's space.

I replaced them with 15 amp.  Used 2 relays, 1 per 2 horns.  Overkill, but we'll see.

Yessum. You linked a bunch of articles about it the first time I set it up so I didn't kill myself. I've got four bolts left to install I should have said. Everything else is in. Just need hardware to finish

Great. Some folks don't realize how dangerous it is to ride with just 4pts w/ the anti/sub straps. Doesn't matter if you are going off road, commuting or doing track days.

There is a reason for the one or two other points.

Big problem and I see  cars done on some of the TV shows w/ only 4pts. Just a lawsuit waiting to happen for shop and Discovery.  Would love to see the ambulance chasers make live difficult for Discovery.

After finding a puddle under my Jeep last weekend and discovering many of the break lines were rusted, I sucked down the cost and effort of redoing most of the brake system. This weekend was better. Started finding that my blower fan started going out. So, I went out to buy a new resistor and fan switch. Replaced the resistor with no luck. Pulled the fan switch and noticed that it wasn't mounted all the way. Blew off the dust and reseated the plug. All is working fine. Naturally, will hold on to the part and leave the center dash off for the week to ensure that this is not just a fluke! :tu

After a bit of inquiring and some back room deals today we took a long lunch and picked up a legacy group from back in the olden days of the club. For those of you who know it... Finished installing the harnesses. Need to adjust and trim. And picked up another powertank and mount tonight. Debating running just the mount or heavens to Betsy running both tanks..... Need to order a different connector for one end of it to make it match mine. Discovered the "last" air leak that was sending hot air at my feet.  The rubber boot that pushes onto the firewall around the steering column came loose and was up the column a few inches.  Pushed it back on (very tight fit) and felt no air coming in this morning.  Hopefully i'll have toasty feet this winter and not loose so much AC as well.  Still have a trip to OBX and MB to go over the next few weeks.

no, I wasn't going to. It stays in the elements a lot and gets super funky if I have the padding. My head and extremities are no wear near the cage either.

Last night I noticed flickering of the headlights when I was driving home later than normal. So I popped the hood and put the lights on. I figured it was a ground. And was right. But shocked at which one it was.

In the dark I could clearly see constant sparking between the ground wire I ran to the one of the grill support bars that go from the cowl to the grill. The nut had worked its way loos to the point that a ground wire was not making direct contact. Nice little fire hazard.

So this morning I tightened that nut. Very exciting stuff. ;)

Got my powertank back from dain last night so I mounted it next to the second one to see how rediculous it was gonna be. Side note can't tell if I like it or not. Added some jk flair to the yj to make inspection in theory easier. And helped lift a Wagoner. And by help lift I mean stand back and work on my jeep while they're cussing and drink his beer. Wired in a set of back up lights on My pastor's jeep. he complained of the brake line feeling a little squishy. He got under to look at it while I hit the brakes..... The jet from the broken brake line hit him square in the forehead. so after a trip to the auto parts store we fixed the line and got him back out on the road! Jeeps rebel when they sit for to long... or get sold lol

It's been a couple years focusing on the house and doing nothing with the Jeep. Wife needs to get to home to an island off the west coast of Canada next year so I finally got permission to spend some money converting the Jeep to an overland vehicle, we're going to drive the trip.

Last week was the roof rack, new bumper and roof top tent install.

Doing the tent without side steps, think I twisted my knee pretty good. Got new side armor with steps on the way to replace those rubi rails. I'm now at the point of upgrading previous upgrades. Also, I'll have used rubi rails for a 4 door for sale soon.

Small local Cars & Coffee outside of Old Town (Hollin Hall Shopping center) - typically there are 30-50 cars. Sunday was on the higher side - as one person put it, "today is big block weather". A lot of American Muscle, a couple of Gassers, a fair number of British cars, a few JDM's, dune buggy, and even a Super Bird. Oh yea, and two Jeeps :lol

Can't see it, so I don't know.  I'm sure it's bright at night though.  My grand-daughter helped me put it on so we had fun doing it.  At least there's that.  Coming from a motorcycle background - more brake lights are better! (edited: to a point that is.)

Threw the soft doors on the Scrambler for my commute as I saw rain in the forecast.  Did not need them.  Then came home and ordered some items for the 3a.  THe little guy needed some attention.

Gonna put the hard top on the Scrambler soon.  Sooner than I wanted since I will be changing offices and my commute will mean leaving it in an open lot during the days.  Grrrr.

I don't know if this is real or not, but this is no mere Roadrunner.  This is the Iconic Superbird.  In original form, it came with either the legendary 426 Hemi, or Super Commando (440 Six-Pack).  I had a 1970 Challenger with a Super Commando and manged to average 3K miles on a set of rear tires.  Those were truly the "good old days"!

Yep - that is a numbers matching, near original Superbird. But it is not equipped with any options - bench seat, four speed, and super commando 4 barrel.

Hey but it is still in my top 5 dream cars..... It is hard to believe that in 1970 you could hardly give the ugly ducklings away, now it takes $150K to just get anyone's attention.

Who knew  :?

I like them. I have a Ford 8.8 in the rear. The rear one does seep gear lube out of the drain plug. I saw that mentioned in one of the reviews (easy fix) but otherwise I really like them.

Unfortunately my Grand Cherokee is gonna be on those jack stands for a long time. I found some really nasty rust in the right side "frame rail" (I know, it's unibody but else do you call them?) where the trans cross member / front control arms mount. I had a rust hole in the floor next to the frame that I fixed last year but I didn't realize it had spread into the frame. It's very crunchy and not much holding it all together. I have decided that it's unsafe to drive until it gets fixed. Time to start saving for a MIG welder. I wish I hadn't sold the one I had.

Worked on a buddies jku today. Bought unit bearings because we knew one was toast. Bout ball joints just in case.... Dropped the knuckle and the ball lowers on both sides we're swinging in the breeze. So after fighting with the harbor freight set for four hours. Everything is done and bolted back up ready for the next mod and ready for me to warranty then sell the harbor freight press and buy a snap on.

Gave the Scrambler a little love today. Put a can of carb cleaner through it. Hope that helps a little hesitation it has developed.

Also, because it does not already have enough parts from various other Jeep models, I added a couple of TJ tow hooks. One in front and one in back.

Nice Roadrunner!

That one looks like a 440 car. The Hemi had the dual quads with the open element oval air cleaner. The aero trim on the a pillars is correct, as are some other details, so I assume it is real.

On the way back from Maryland one blade of the fan decided to get close and personal with the radiator... I had to limp on back home with the fan jammed in the lower portion of the radiator.  The damage to the radiator is minor with a small leak -  I'll drop it off at the radiator shop in the morning. Hopefully they can turn it around quickly.

The fan is a different story - I am trying to find a replacement that will arrive this week. What is not clear in the picture is that in addition to the bent blade the rivet tore through the blade.

(http://i.imgur.com/AdV7UBT.jpg) (https://imgur.com/AdV7UBT)

It is a 7 blade 19.5"  fan for the 258 with a serpentine belt - spins in the opposite of the v-belt 258 (CW looking forward). If you know of a source or have an extra you are willing to part with, please let me know.

I think that some of the 4.0L's used that fan. I will check my parts pile and see if I have one. I found I had a nice clutch fan when I was looking for one for my CJ. I had the same thing happen to it. I have no idea when but the blade cracked off the fan and took out the bottom of the shroud. Thankfully it didn't kill the new rad. I had a time finding a fan. I had a 7 blade non-clutch fan on it, that is super rare. I ended up with a flex fan as that was all I could find. I do not believe it cools anything like the OEM. So I am still keeping an eye out for another stock one too.

Highlander

I found several of the OEM fans on ebay for the v-belt configuration but non for the serpentine configuration (opposite direction).

I ordered a Flex-a-lite fan and new clutch from Summit this morning as well as dropped the radiator off at the radiator shop... I should receive the fan & clutch Wednesday and have the radiator back from the shop about the same time. Assuming I measured everything correctly I should be back on the road by bed time on Wednesday....  (fingers crossed)

I am still looking for an OEM fan so if anyone finds one, let me know....

It's steadily becoming cheaper to replace the things. It's a pain to find a good shop for antique radiators.

I think I fixed my crazy rear brake lights.  Lately (more and more) my rear lights would just randomly flash like the 4-ways were on.  I had no idea because it wasn't lighting the dash lights.  People would tell me at traffic lights or sometimes I would hear it ticking when at a light.  If I turned the signal on and off it would usually stop.  Yesterday I took each rear light apart to look at them.  The 3 mounting bolts on each one was very rusty.  I cleaned them up and put them back in with dielectric grease on them.  Hopefully they are cut to clean metal now.  I also noticed the driver's side bulb was black and the 2 contacts on the bottom were about melted off.  This was probably causing a cross short making them blink.  Maybe water got into it a few times.  So far, I haven't heard them ticking at a traffic light.

do yourself a favor and pull the multi function switch on the column. I'll bet dollers to doughnuts that the wiring behind it is fried and you need to replace it.

Already checked and double-checked.  I'm also on my second switch.  The latest one is an OEM since I thought it was a bad switch.  SirJames was having a similar issue and it corrected his I think.  I'm thinking it was pulling the ground thru the bulbs (or one) when the lights were on.

Oh yeah, it only did it when the lights were on too.

I'm having a similar phantom issue. My radio and odometer are blinking when the turn signal is on and the lights are off because of the wiring back there

That's almost certainly a grounding issue

in the wiring that burned up behind the multi function switch. I said that. Thus why I said his was similar.

Picked up the radiator from the shop - less than a hundred bucks to repair...  :tu

Next a new fan and clutch. They are still tracking for a Wednesday deliver (before 8:00 PM) ---  come on little brown truck...

I had to go with a Flex-a-lite as well. They were the best I could find fast.

How bad was the rad jacked as in did they just plug off some of the cores?

Title: Re: What did you do to your Jeep today? August 2018
Post by: RattleTrap55 on August 28, 2018, 10:05:47 AM
The radiator damage was minor, no damage to the cores just a small cut in the radiator at the base of a couple of the cooling fins along with a little paint scraped off a few cooling fins.

I have the twin stick set up on mine and have been running it like that for years.
There is no need to mess with the interlock.

You can have just FWD (high or low) or RWD (high and low) with removing the interlock,
it is really just a safe guard to make sure you do run front in HIGH and read in LOW.

I've already had to replace my multi-function switch once too...shortly after I got the Jeep and hooked up OEM fogs wouldn't work...found that the plastic wiring harness was fried.

Really hope that it's just the pigtail connector for my high beam issue and not the multi-function switch again. (no i haven't installed the new pigtail yet)

I was just playing around with it in the driveway. I can run RWD in high or low but FWD will only work in low range. I think I read somewhere that you have to grind out a notch in one of the shift rods to get FWD only High range. Since that involves a fair amount of disassembly of the t-case, it's gonna have to wait. Honestly, I can't really see the need for FWD High unless I stripped out the splines on one of those AMC 20 rear axles and had to limp it home. Since I still need to replace the pilot bushing, which means dropping the tranny and t-case, I may think about it then.

My fog lights were randomly coming on, or at least the dash light for them was, as I don't have fog lights installed. To Stephen's point, when I replaced the switch part of the plug did crumble, but it still works! That whole wiring harness is known to heat up and crack/crumble, but you know all about that having been in there twice already.

I still have my stock multi function switch if anyone wants it for testing/spare. Happy to put it in a flat rate box and ship. Don't really have space in the new apartment for this stuff but I'm too much of a horder to throw it away lol I've got a write up saved somewhere on how to fix the fog light issue too, just never got around to it.

Got the CJ7 inspected so I'm good for another year. Oh and now I understand the complaints about the new sticker location. It wasn't a problem with my Grand Cherokee but on the CJ it's in a lousy place now. Instead of being able to glance to the left corner as I'm pulling into a parking place or whatever, now I have to look over or around this thing. Annoying!

Drove it to work today.... :tu

New fan & clutch arrived yesterday - installed the new fan on the old clutch (new clutch was too long), started it, everything is working. The new fan is much lighter than the original I am not sure what that really means.

It would appear I am road/trail worthy again.....

Note to Highlandcj: Check out the Dorman clutch fan 621-323 - this is much closer to the original, however it is only available in "standard" rotation and I need a "reverse" rotation. I continue to watch ebay for a OEM fan.

I almost thing the lighter is a burden, I believe that it flexes under RPM and reduces the amount of air flow as the flex changes the blade pitch. It's less rotational mass so it spins easier but I would rather have the flow. I do not run a fan clutch, it's direct drive. Read: less things to break and it never turns off.

Dang - you said what I was thinking when I opened the box last night. Without a doubt the metal is a lighter gauge as well as one fewer smaller blades... I am a little concerned about air flow so I am still looking for an OEM fan....  Keep an eye out for one.

Got the ball joints replaced with synergy ball joints . Also got an alignment . I am guessing the break in of these ball joints is a real thing.  Now the Jeep is flighty .. or more like battling back . I have read that it takes over 500 miles before it feels right.
