Title: Looking for an easy and fun trail to drive with the kids.
Post by: Wrangler#1811 on April 23, 2019, 07:13:29 AM
Hey peeps,

Hope this message is in the correct section.

Iím looking to take my 04 Rubi on a fun but not too complicated ride.  Iím still sporting the 16Ē Moab rims with 245/75/R16 with no lift yet.  We have spent our time cleaning it up and making it look nicer.  A lift is on the schedule.

For now I would like to take the family on a trail ride.  Any suggestions?

With Peter's Mill closed for repairs,  your best bet is Flagpole Knob. It is west of Harrisonburg, VA

Noted.  I need to get there some day.

Thatís almost 3 hours from me in Gainesville, VA so something closer would be great.

There really isn't anything closer. Peters Mill would have been it. Unfortunately not much choice close by.

FYI, Part of Flagpole Road is closed for the next nine weeks, so that might not be the best choice for the next few weeks; It's the first Critical on the announcements page here;

https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/gwj/alerts-notices

Critical North River RD to Temporarily Close Flagple Road (FS 85A) beginning 4/22/19
Date(s): Apr 9, 2019 - Jun 24, 2019

The USDA Forest Service will temporarily close a section of Flagpole Road (FSR 85A) in Rockingham County, Va. beginning April 22, 2019 to repair storm damage.  The road will be closed at the intersection of Briery Branch Road (SR 924) and extend 3.85 miles beyond this intersection. The road will reopen when repairs are complete which is expected to be in approximately nine weeks.

This repair work is needed to address damage to the road infrastructure and will improve drainage and road safety.  While repairs are underway, portions of the road will be unpassable. Also, heavy equipment will be traveling into and along the road making the road unsafe for visitor traffic.

For more information contact the North River Ranger District office at 540-432-0187.

When did they close Peter's Mill?  Richmond group was just there a couple weeks ago.

Well, I am getting dumb in my older age. HAHA! Even the post I quoted was for Flagpole. Please disregard my posts.  :p :p

Not sure if Rapidan WPA and Rapidan fire road are the same or not but...

You can catch the fire road near Syria Va and take it most of the way up towards Camp Hoover. Really easy drive through the woods on gravel with a short hike and some history at the end. Seems like a pretty kid friendly excursion.

Peter's Mill is open but the tower road is still closed in some spots.  So you have to get to it from either the south portion by the Edinburg Gap lot on Rt 675 or coming from the east on 758 by little fort campground.  Was there this past weekend and the rains changed a large portion of the trail.

The Rapidan fire road is in the Rapidan WMA Rapidan tract. The Rapidan WMA Middle Tract a few miles to the southwest also has a couple of Jeep trails.

The fire road is super kid-friendly, with several places to stop and explore the river and cascades.

The Rapidan Wildlife Management Area is close enough and we love the Shanandoah area.  Any chance anyone has the road or track marked on their iPhone so we can drive straight there? Or maybe a landmark I can look up on the phone?

I don't use 'smart phones' so I don't really know what you're asking.  :mrgreen  But use Criglersville, VA, as a landmark for directions, and then proceed north on the Old Blue Ridge Turnpike, hang left onto Quaker Run Road, keep going until you run out of pavement, take a dog leg up the hill past the last cabin, and keep on trucking. If my daughter doesn't have soccer, we may be up there next weekend to fish and look for bears.
