Replace rear drums and break shoes YJ
It was challenging
I learned the on the shoe adjustable, the rear driver side was reversed thread and the passenger side is regular thread.
You need to keep an eye on that.
The whole thing can be a puzzle if you didnít take photos.

Good job getting the front and rear shoes on the correct side. Lots of guys look over this.

Another trick, besides taking pictures, is to pull both drums but only work on the brake hardware of one side at a time. This way if you have any questions on how things go back together you can always reference the other side. Not a small undertaking, if this was your first time great job!

That is what I do every time. Nice to have the reference, even if it is a mirror image.

After fighting with the Scrambler for a week, I got it running again. I suspect the timing chain jumped a tooth or so. Found the compression stroke and set it all up and noticed that the timing mark was off a bit to the advanced side. So I am sure something is wrong and it will happen again. But for now it runs and will get me to the commuter lot. Maybe the chain is stretched. Will look i to that another day.

And new day,new problems. Even though I was getting the Jeep started, i think the timing chain is still off a tooth or two and making it difficult to start. Well, as a result, I went on a test drive and came back home. Turned it off and went to turn it over again. The starter literally blew into pieces. It also chewed off a few teeth on the flywheel. So it is down for a while. A lot of work is needed now. Craptastic. Sigh.

Productive morning in the garage:

Removed upper rear shocks bolts and put the anti seize on them I forgot a week ago when doing the lift (oops)
Replaced the foam upper rear bump stop that broke off last weekend during the lift install
Changed gear oil in front and rear axles
Replaced rusty locking long nuts
Upgraded fog lights to the 05-06 versions
Replaced a JKU rear bumper for a friend

While greasing the front end I figured out why my Jeep has been rolling in the corners... need to go buy a few of those pins now.

You are the first to say anything not so nice about the swap. And yes, I thought it was priced well enough. I will need to get a wiring harness though.

I this the one out of the Scrambler?  Are you going from a 4.2 to 4.0?  What's the difference?  Will your replacement just bolt up or will you need adapters?  Did I read you also have an Atlas to go in?

The 4.2 will come out. This 4.0 will go in. It has the aw4 (with overdrive) and the t-case, but I wonít be using the t case. While it is not an atlas, I did just install a dana 300 with 4-1 and twins sticks. So I want to keep that in the Scrambler. So now I need to find some important things like a wiring harness and ecu for this 4.0. Supposedly it is an easy swap. We will see. I have a lot to read so that I am prepared.

Scott (Crazyskier92) may have an ECU and the wiring for it since he parts out a lot of TJs.

You planning to run the the auto trans?  I've got a 98 AT ECU laying around that you are welcome to.  Many years ago I swapped a 99 4.0 into my CJ-7 and it was a huge improvement over the carbed 4.2.  You won't be disappointed.

It is in Warrenton off 29 close to Effees or I can bring it with me to Herndon when I go to work.  I still have the motor and wiring harness if you are considering adapting it to your current harness and want to look at it for ideas.

PM me and we can set something up.

I've been a little busy...

A couple weekends ago I upgraded to a Durango Power Steering box.  Last weekend I installed Poison Spyder hood louvers.  This weekend LED headlights and a dual coolant switch in prep for a taurus fan.

Fixed the damage from wheeling it a little harder at Chaos on Labor Day weekend.

 - replaced 2 broken grease fittings on the drive shafts
 - replaced torn front driveshaft grease collar
 - replaced busted front yoke
 - ground and painted all rock damage on frame, control arm brackets, and differentials
 - greased all steering and driveshaft fittings

Still on the list to fix, a steering problem. Turning the 35" tires and beadlocks on the rocks is inconsistent and sometimes problematic.

Got the new trackbar bolts in the mail. Should I use loctite even though I have nylock nuts?

Title: Re: What did you do to your Jeep today? - September 2019
Post by: RFH_98TJ on September 11, 2019, 01:29:27 PM
Personally, I'd use a flange nut.  Nylocks have less steel contact (because they have the insert) with the bolt so they offer less griping power most of the time.  Locktite would not really be necessary, but could be used on a flanged bolt.

I switched from a clutched mechanical dan to the taurus electrical fan a couple of years ago. What it did for me was give me room. My mechanical fan was too close to the radiator and bounced into it one day and sprang a coolant leak. I gained about 2 inches more room bu installing the twin fan taurus set up.

The last trail ride I went on the coolant temps kept creeping up while we were going slow or sitting still.  The louvers will hopefully help reduce the overall under hood temps a little.  The electric fan will automatically kick into high when the temps rise.  Preventing me from getting worried and turning the heat on in 100 degree weather. 😎

I probably could have just replaced the fan clutch, but for around 50 bucks I was able to purchase everything I need from salvage yards to do the swap.

Dont forget if you paid VA state income taxes in 2018 you will get an addl refund check in Oct from the state. Mine is around $100.
Still not even with the Feds since I had over $10K State and local taxes and I couldnt deduct them all on my return. Will be in the same mess this year unless Congress changes the law for 2019.
I would rather eat the couple hundred bucks and listen to folks in NY, NJ, MA, CA, and MD scream about the taxes they cant deduct this year.  We see since Congress still needs to pass a continuing funding resolution or a budget for FY 2020. They arent close and House Dems keep grandstanding.  I could use a few days off in Oct especially since my part of DOD is reorganizing starting Oct 1. My senior leadership will have fun doing this.

I pay my personal property taxes to FFX Cty Marxists online the day before its due. Thank God the county doesnt tax herding dogs as property or I would pay more for my dog than I do my Jeep by triple or more.

I had a weird creak coming from the transmission when I pushed the clutch on or near the top when I let off.  I did a little internet research and spoke with a good friend of mine from back home. I determined it is the rod from the slave cylinder.  I pulled it out, put a little grease on it and put it back in, problem solved.  Maybe took 20 mins. Itís nice when repairs are quick and painless.   8)

Forgot to post on friday, but I installed JW Speaker LED tail lights on the JKUR. I have been having issues with the stock tail lights and decided I'd had enough. Install was quick and easy. Tried to replace my fogs with a set of LEDs as well, but ran into some snags and had to call no joy.

Because Iím jammed up until the new bushing arrives (shifter side transfer case shifter bushing got brittle and fell apart) I gave the interior the cleaning that it has needed for a long time.  I even cleaned this area under the center console!

Has anyone come up with a better shifter bushing /TC lever bushing than the plastic ones? Maybe something made of brass?
