Title: Handling surface rust

Alright. Whats the best way to handle surface rust shown in the pic below? Clean it up with a degreaser, sand it out, and hit it with spray paint? Or am I way off base?

I really donít see any serious surface rust, but your sway bar link is disconnected, looks like the top bolt is missing??

It is. Ordered a new one.

As far as the rust. Itís really minor, Iím by no means qualified to answer this from a professional stand point.  I see this in the stage of getting ahead of it, do a little preventative care.

Wire wheel and spray paint would be what I would do.

I've done more of these than I care to think about and typically use:

All you need to do the job is some sandpaper and a wire wheel on a drill.  To save on the more expensive rust reformer, only spray that where there's actually rust.  Otherwise take the heavier rust off with the wire wheel and scuff the rest with sandpaper.  Once you blow off the dust, spray it with the paint.  The Krylon spray paints hold up well and the one in the link drys in 8 - 10 minutes.  Both of these can be picked up at your local Walmart.   

People tend to think this is hard job and it really isn't.  Anyone can get good results.  The trick is to remove the rust, clean everything well, and don't be in a hurry.  Also, you can do this in sections and don't have to do it all at once.  Usually, two cans of the rust reformer and three to five cans of paint will cover to entire frame and underside.  More or less may be needed, depending on how bad it is now.  Yours doesn't look bad at all.  Lastly, for the axles, I typically use gloss paint (the same Krylon 8 Minute stuff).

FWIW, here's one I did using this method.  The results speak for itself!

I can second Rich's advice as I took it myself.  I've made a habit of whenever I'm under the Jeep for any reason, if it looks to be needed I wire wheel the frame area I'm working near and give it a quick touch up.  Quick-dry Rustoleum and cheap-o wire wheels on a mini drill make it too easy to not do it.  Do the big section work once or twice a year when you have wheels off doing brakes, suspension work, tank is down, etc. Little touch ups can happen any time and only help your long-term upkeep.

This is a great thread as I have some sections of my TJ frame that need a little love.  I also want to get all the gunk out of the inside of the frame.  I'm thinking like a hose attached to shop vac.  Any suggestions would great.  Once that is removed, I'll fluid-film the inside.  I"m not going the eastwoods route as it needs to be absolutely perfect inside there.

If you haven't already, you may wish to drill a 1/2" or 5/8" hole on the bottom of the frame at each control arm.  4 holes total.  This lets water drain out easily and helps to keep the frame drier inside.

Yes, I've done that already.  I just need to get more rust flakes out and some other muck.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
