I get that a snatch strap is primarily intended for yanking a vehicle out of the mud, but could it also be used for a situation that you'd use a tow strap? Is it best to have one of each?

In my opinion a tow strap is fine. Just take it slow and don't jerk it. Maybe if I lived down by the outer banks or some place where a snatch strap would be more needed I'd have both.

Ideally both and use them accordingly.  For a long time I just used tow straps. It definitely works. But a snatch strap is more effective for an impacted vehicle.

Tow strap is also nice for anchoring a vehicle setup for winching.

If you carry Bud Light for hydration you need a snatch strap (get a Bubba Strap).  If you carry Dasani for hydration you should get a tow strap.

I carry all 4 so I am ready for anything.

I carry tow straps: a 4"x30' a 4"x65' and a 6" x 6' tree saver. I have enough length to usually get to / stay on firm ground. With the straps and winch cable, I can reach out around 200 feet or anchor the Jeep for heavy winching.

I also carry a crazy duty 1.25" amsteel blue winch rope in the tow rig. It's around 50'

I carry both plus a tree saver. I run rocks almost exclusively. 

Used the tow strap and tree saver many times.  The bubba strap,  a snatch strap, never.  BUT when I was in my teens and twenties, young and stupid, the snatch strap would have saved two windshields, one bumper and one axle.  I carry all three because I may decide to be young and stupid again.

While wheeling at the Cove last fall, we had a member of the group (no names will be used) experiance a clutch failure on Bunny.  We first tried a tow strap which failed, then moved on to winching with similar results.  At this point Superman SuperTayt broke out his bubba rope and we yanked our stranded compadre right out.  It was actually quite impressive how well the kinetic rope worked.   Thumbs Up

Need to throw in a kudos to John with BigDogs who arranged a trailer and towed the wounded pup into Winchester for repair.  That was solid   Cheers

Thats a great story.  Never I never would have thought to go that route, but then desperate times call for desperate measures.  How did the snatched rig react on the strap once it popped free? I assume there was running room in front of it to get the tension off the strap or space to back up the pulling rig?  Love to hear more about using a snatch strap in rocks.
